Structure and working principle

Electrochemical corrosion is the main form of corrosion in oil and gas extraction. Petroleum pipelines, downhole casings, oil pipes, pumping rods, and their downhole tools are in long-term contact with soil, well fluids, natural gas, and formation water (seawater). Different wellbore types come into contact with different formations, fluids, electrolytes, and water content, resulting in different electrochemical corrosion behaviors in the wellbore. Electrochemical corrosion in oil and gas extraction is the most complex and unique type of corrosion among all metals.

The sacrificial anode method of cathodic protection technology is used for electrochemical corrosion prevention of oil pipes, which can slow down the electrochemical corrosion of oil pipes and prolong their service life. Connect the sacrificial anode of the oil and water well to the oil pipe, and lower it into the well together with the oil pipe during operation. The oil pipe and sacrificial anode are in the same electrolyte environment to form a new macroscopic battery. This negative electrode is the anode of the new battery, and the oil pipe becomes the cathode. A cathodic current is provided to the oil pipe through the electrolyte from the anode body, and the sacrificial anode material is continuously consumed, The lifespan of the tubing cathodic protector becomes the extended lifespan of the tubing.
